Eagle Speedster E-Type revealed

21st Century take on classic E-Type gets built in Blighty. 4.7-litres of straight-six loveliness included...

Meet the Eagle Speedster. It's based on the 50-year-old Jaguar E-Type, every single component's been replaced or upgraded, it makes 340lb ft of torque and looks most excellent.
It's the folly of Rick Velaj, an American car collector based in Connecticut, who asked UK-based Jaguar tinkerers, Eagle E-Types, to build him ‘something a bit special.' Eagle's designer, Paul Brace, scribbled an outline, Velaj's root fizzed and after a few months the Speedster rolled out of its East Sussex-based workshop.
See more pics of the Eagle Speedster here
Despite the familiar outline, the Speedster's 100 per cent bespoke. Its all-aluminum body panels have been gently remolded from original tinware by Nuneaton-based RS Panels, it's got its own tailored wraparound windscreen and the floor's been dropped to create an ultra-low profile.
Underneath the bodywork there's a 4.7-litre Jag six-pot, which has also been fettled by Eagle. It churns out 340lb ft of torque, which promises to hustle the Speedster's 1100kg bulk along nicely.
The handling's been played with too - it's got sports suspension and a broadened track thanks to custom-built alloy knock-off wire wheels.
600bhp supercharged Jaguar 'Growler' concept to be built
Inside, there are a few nods to the original E - dashboard, gauges and switchgear - but the aluminum fascia, diamond-stitched leather chairs, door cards and arm rest are all custom-made.
Do you like it, TopGear.commers? Or should classics be kept original?

Twin-turbo Corvette hits 231mph

Modestly-tuned Chevy makes a lot of speed in Texas. And by modest, we mean quite immodest
Chevrolet Corvette
An enormously brave gentleman has taken a modified Chevrolet Corvette and maxed it at the Texas mile, hitting a top speed of 231mph.
Undeterred by Underground Racing's high-speed smash at the mile last October, said man shrugged off the threat of a combustible demise and piloted the twin-turbo, 1,500hp Late Model Racecraft Chevy along the concrete.
A lot of power + rear-wheel-drive + slightly plasticky build quality = potential new method of limb removal. Luckily it all went spiffingly. Watch the video and then ask yourself, should you? Would you? Could you?

Volkswagen Eos 1.4 TSI SE driven

£23,970 Driven June 2011
Rated 10 out of 20

Additional Info

These are confusing times at Volkswagen. The Golf-based coupe-cabriolet Eos has been facelifted to bring it into line with the rest of the family look, just as VW announces that it's going to start building a Golf Cabriolet. Surely some mistake?
The Eos hasn't even been priced wildly differently to distinguish it from the Golf - it's only £200 more expensive. So the choice between the two ultimately boils down to a simple matter of the roof - the Eos's is metal, while the Golf's is fabric.
OK, we haven't driven the Golf yet, but visually the Eos is hardly ground-breaking, even if the mild rejig brings more angular front and rear lights, as well as integrated LED daytime running lights and a reprofiled front bumper. It's sharpened things up and compared to other cars in the coupe-cabriolet class, the Eos doesn't have a terribly fat arse due to the neat three-piece roof. Chubbier than the Golf's though.
There have also been some spec changes as part of the facelift. There's remote roof operation (£425) so you can lower the lid using the key, and heat-reflecting leather can be specified as part of a cow upgrade (£2,200).
The advantage of the Eos's metal roof is refinement. The 1.4-litre TSI has always been a smooth lump, and it's no different in the Eos. It's the twin-charger engine, using both a supercharger and turbocharger, to generate 158bhp and 177lb ft, so the 0-62mph sprint only takes 8.8 seconds - competitive with most hard-top rivals. Fuel economy is reasonable at 41.5mpg.
There's never any lack of torque - even when you accelerate from below 1,500rpm, the Eos responds quite well. But it doesn't feel as punchy as the equivalent Golf hatch. The blame for this lies at the feet of that metal roof - the Eos is roughly 200kg heavier as a result. That's the same as loading your car up with a pair of prop forwards.
But the ride and handling fit in well with this slightly more sedate feel. The Eos cruises very well - the suspension is comfortable, and you hardly get any scuttle-shake over big potholes. The downside is that it's boring - the steering is precise, but very numb, and there's never any excitement generated from any part of the Eos. Buy it to potter, not to be wowed.
Pottering isn't good enough anymore, though. The changes don't distinguish the Eos enough from rivals, so it has only quality and brand image to fall back on. And knowing how good the normal Golf is, the Eos's biggest problem will be the upcoming convertible version. The Cabrio is based on a newer chassis and, in theory, should drive better. Consider your foot shot, VW.
We like: Ride quality, smooth engine
We don't like: Fatter arse than new Golf Cab
The verdict: Still comfy and quiet. But there are more exciting ways to get wind in your hair
Performance: 0-62mph in 8.8secs, max 135mph, 41.5mpg
Tech: 1390cc, 4cyl, FWD, 158bhp, 177lb ft, 1526kg, 157g/km CO2
Tick this on the options list: Wind deflector, £255
And avoid this: Park Assist, £330

The new BMW M5. High-speed testing at the Nardò Ring.

Debuts later this year
BMW has released a new video of the 2012 M5 undergoing high speed testing at the Nardò Ring in Italy.
Essentially a production version of the M5 concept, the car will feature an aggressive body kit, a sport-tuned suspension and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with approximately 575 PS (423 kW / 567 bhp) and 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) of torque. Additional information is limited, but the M5 will be equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive could eventually be offered.
The car is expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but the video hints that it could debut at M Festival in June.

Nissan LEAF: Gas Powered Everything commercial

Company disses the Chevrolet Volt
Nissan North America has unveiled a new ad campaign that asks "What if everything ran on gas?"
Created to promote the Leaf, the commercial takes a humorous look at the advantages of electricity. More interestingly, Nissan takes a swipe at the Chevrolet Volt which is a range-extended electric vehicle that uses a petrol engine to extend its 25 to 50 mile (40 to 80 km) range on electricity alone.
Nissan will begin airing 15-second teasers later this week, before debuting the full commercial on June 12th during the NBA Finals.

Thanks to these modifications, the engine produces 410 hp (306 kW / 416 PS) and 370 lb-ft (501 Nm) of torque. This enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds which is 0.7 seconds faster than the standard model.
Besides the engine tweaks, STaSIS also installed Ohlins dampers, Alcon brakes and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels.

Mazda RX and rotary engine in jeopardy - report

Slow sales to blame?

If you're a Mazda fan, you might want to look away as a new report is indicating the company's rotary engine and RX sports car could be history.
Citing an anonymous source, Car and Driver is reporting that last week's rumor of a hybridized RX-9 is untrue. Additionally, the magazine says a successor to the RX-8 is increasingly unlikely as sales have been dismal enough that Mazda has decided to forgo a special edition to highlight its end of production.
Despite all the dire predictions, there is reportedly a movement to keep the sports car alive. While it seems like a long shot, the model - if approved - is rumored to adopt the RX-7 moniker and ride on an extended version of the next-generation Miata platform.
