Porsche 911 GTS vs Audi R8 Spyder

This is a cabrio supercar eclipse, the moment where two cars of different orbits overlap for a spectacular instant. The R8 Spyder has always traced a loftier financial loop than the 911 Carrera cabrio - the V10-powered R8 drop-top starts at £116,660, while you can get a box-fresh 911 convertible for £74,958 - but with the launch of this, ahem, budget-version R8 V8 and the top-of-the-line 911 GTS, two German giants have aligned neatly. True, there's long been the 911 Turbo to tempt soft-top buyers who simply wouldn't consider opening their chequebook for less than a six-figure sum, but for a proper, rear-wheel-drive 911 cabriolet, the £85,249 GTS is unchartered territory.

This article was originally published in the May 2011 issue of Top Gear magazine

The GTS is, remember, a last hurrah for the 997 Carrera range before an all-new 911 arrives this autumn. Its naturally aspirated, 3.8-litre flat six now puts out 402bhp through the rear wheels, meaning the GTS gives away just 22bhp to the V8-engined R8. Out on the road, the two cabrios are devilishly closely matched for pace. Both will crack 62mph in 4.8 seconds, both will get within a sneeze of 190mph. In a straight-line test, you'll run out of road and licence-points before you can squeeze a Rizla between them. But on a bendy B-road, most of us will go quicker in the R8. It's an astonishingly easy car to drive fast right from the off: simply point the nose at the apex, trust the supernatural balance and grip, and fling out the other end on a wave of surprise at your newfound talent. Sheesh, this car is good.
Threading the 911 through a corner is a more complex proposition. Traction from the huge rear tyres is near infinite - the GTS shares its wider rear track with the 4WD Carreras - but there's a little initial vagueness from the front end as you tip into a bend, requiring a couple of stabs at the wheel before locking onto the right line. That's partly because of the GTS's twitchier steering, far wrigglier than the Audi's more passive, motorway-friendly set-up. At the very limit, the 911 gives you more feedback, but at the expense of a little fluency. It's clearly a hugely talented car, but one that takes a while to feel comfortable on the limit. In the R8, you're an instant hero.
The Audi's a worse option if you're a contract killer or serial introvert. The familiar silhouette of the 911, proportions unchanged since the 1760s, allows it to melt anonymously into the British roadscape. No chance in the R8, especially not in Hollywood-dental-treatment white. The R8 has been on sale for four years, but it still draws a crowd like few other cars. Your audience won't be disappointed by the noise, either: on full throttle, the R8 emits a NASCAR bark that the 911's chattery, rorty six simply can't match

The old-timer Porsche can still trump the upstart R8 in a couple of departments. Seats, for one. And economy - the six-speed manual 911 returns 26.2mpg and 254g/km of CO2 to the R8's 19.6mpg and 337g/km. But buying a supercar for its practical seats and economy is like ordering a lapdance because your legs are a bit chilly.

The GTS is one of the very best of the cabrios in Porsche's baffling 911 line-up - quick and engaging with a beautifully judged ride. But shell out your hard-earned on it, and I guarantee there'll be a moment every so often - maybe once a week, maybe once a month - where you'd think, "Damn, wish I'd bought the coupe." The 911 is slightly compromised in soft-top form: a bit blurred round the edges, a little unsure of its purpose. The R8 feels even better than its hard-top sibling. It's a bona fide supercar, as good in V8 form as V10. Eclipse that.

Fisker Karma debuts in Monaco during Gran Prix

Prince Albert takes the electric vehicle fresh off the production line for a spin around the Gran Prix circuit ahead of the race

The final production ready Fisker Karma model has made its European debut in style at the 2011 Formula One Gran Prix in Monaco this past weekend.
On hand was the head honcho of the small principality himself, Prince Albert II, who took the Karma electric vehicle fresh off the production line for a spin around the Gran Prix circuit ahead of the qualifying run there last Saturday (May 28). Accompanying his Serene Highness was Fisker co-founder and CEO Henrik Fisker.
The Fisker Karma is an electric super car with a total of 300 kW (408 PS / 403 bhp) 1,300 Nm (959 lb/ft) of torque on tap. Two electric motors each featuring 150 kW power the rear axle. The lithium-ion battery pack allows for a pure electric range of 80 km (50 miles).
Top speed is 201 km/h (125 mph) and the 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) sprint takes just 5.9 seconds when in Sport mode. The Karma also features a Stealth mode that's more stingy with energy.
The Karma is a range-extended vehicle, so it comes with a 2.0 liter gasoline engine too that drives a 175 kW electric generator to recharge the batteries while the car is in motion. The engine does not directly power the drive motors and extends the range of the Karma to around 483 km (300 miles).
Also unique are the 22-inch aluminum wheels which come standard on the car.

2012 Porsche 911 will feature a 7-speed manual gearbox - report

Longer seventh gear will help improve fuel-economy and reduce engine noise on lengthy cruises

According to Car & Driver, the next-generation Porsche 911 will feature a newly developed 7-speed manual gearbox.
Sources at Porsche have confirmed the story to the U.S. auto magazine.
The new 7-speed transmission is meant to improve fuel-economy and reduce engine noise by means of a long seventh gear.
The news may take Porsche enthusiasts aback, particularly those accustomed to the 6-speed manual gearbox.
The gear ratios may have to be altered and those Porsche drivers may have to adapt to the new settings but it is likely the first six gears will still closely match the current 6-speed manual's ratios.
The next-generation Porsche 911 will debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

World’s first BMX triple backflip

Video: Guinness World Record set as New Zealander goes loopy on his bike

BMX backflip
"Landing with both wheels on the downramp was the most amazing feeling the world," muses 24-year old Jed Mildon, holder of the Guinness record for completing the world's first BMX bike triple backflip.
That's right, New Zealander Jed looped three times on his bike, along a 66ft high super-ramp catapulting him into the unknown-and-potentially-bone-crushing-limb-pulverising-end, before landing perfectly on the purpose-built ‘Megabox' landing.
"I'm so pumped to have aimed for something once deemed impossible and made my dream a reality," said Jed. A representative of the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand at the BMX Jam in New Zealand to approve said looping action, which took Jed three months of training. We suspect much Alka-Seltzer was ingested.

BMW trademarks 'M2' moniker for new 2-Series

Current 1-Series will be turned into a 2-Series to make room for a new FWD entry-level 1er

Details on this story have been trickling out for a while but things appear to be getting clearer with each new tidbit.
The basic news is this:
The current BMW 1-Series will be turned into a 2-Series to make room for a new FWD entry-level vehicle that will take up the 1er moniker.
So, that means BMW registering the 'M2' name in both Germany and the United States is intending to make sure they have a name for what will be the successor to the current 1-Series M.
Of course, a patent filing doesn't mean a model is in development, but taken together with previous reports it seems that a future 2-Series will be the continuation of the current 1-Series under a new series number.
Variants will include a 2-Series coupe (allegedly to be called F22), a convertible (F23) and an M2 performance model along with the standard 5-door hatch body-style version.

Gumball 3000 2011 Highlights

Gumball 3000 video show the collection of supercars taking part in the rally race across Europe

Here's a set of videos from our friend Marchettino, who seems to be everywhere in Italy whenever a good car story is involved.
The footage here shows virtually all the contestants in the Gumball 3000 2011 rally as they make their way through Venice, Italy. We get to see some pretty rare models as well as tuner variants such as the Aston Martin V8 Vantage by Mansory.
Fun stuff and thanks again to Marco!
