DeltaWing racer headed for Le Mans

An all-American effort

The DeltaWing racer was originally created for IndyCar, but the vehicle has just received approval to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2012.
Backed by Highcroft Racing and All American Racers, the DeltaWing effort is known as Project 56 which highlights the fact that the car is a special 56th entry reserved for "a vehicle showcasing new applications and unique technologies previously unseen in the world's greatest endurance race."
Detailed specifications haven't been announced, but Autoweek is reporting the group is in talks to acquire a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that develops 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS). That doesn't sound like much, but the DeltaWing has an aerodynamic design and a light weight of just 1,047 pounds (475 kg) which should enable the car to hit a top speed in excess of 200 mph (322 km/h).
