Lotus Elise & Exige get banished from America - report

Killed over the lack of smart airbags

According to a recent report, Lotus will end production of the North American-spec Elise and Exige in August.

The models are reportedly being killed off because of the U.S. government's mandate that all new vehicles come equipped with "smart" airbags.

Despite the end of North American sales, Lotus will continue to produce the models for Europe until the next-generation Elise is launched in 2015.
