Promises up to a 16% increase in fuel efficiency
The auto industry is just starting to adopt the eight-speed automatic transmission, but that hasn't stopped ZF from introducing the world's first nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Dubbed the 9HP, the transmission promises up to a 16 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the current crop of six-speed automatics. Furthermore, the gearbox is highly-adaptable and can work with engine start/stop systems, hybrid powertrains, and all-wheel drive systems. However, the transmission can only accommodate torque outputs that range from 280 to 480 Nm (206 to 354 lb-ft).
